Changle No.1 Middle School's Flipped Classroom Debuts at ASEAN Education Week: Scope Leverages Technological Innovation to Help Chinese Education Solutions "Go Global"

Guiyang, August 1, 2016 — With the theme "Priority on Education, Fulfilling Our Dream Together," the 9th China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week and the 2nd China-ASEAN Education Ministers' Roundtable Conference grandly opened on August 1st at the Guiyang International Eco-Conference Center. Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council Liu Yandong attended the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech. At this premier annual event for people-to-people and cultural exchange between China and ASEAN, a Shenzhen-based educational information technology company, Shenzhen Scope Technology Co., Ltd., became a highlight at the International Educational Equipment Exhibition, showcasing the "Scope Flipped Classroom" model developed in partnership with Shandong Changle No.1 Middle School.

High-Level Direction: Building a New Pillar of People-to-People Exchange

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of China-ASEAN dialogue relations and the China-ASEAN Year of Educational Exchanges. In her keynote speech, Vice Premier Liu Yandong emphasized that China and ASEAN countries can achieve mutually beneficial cooperation through complementary advantages and resource sharing. She called for enriching the forms of exchange and enhancing practical cooperation in basic education, vocational education, and language teaching. It is reported that this Education Cooperation Week attracted over 1,400 participants from various vocational institutions,校企合作 enterprises, and invited guests from China, ASEAN member states, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

Following the opening ceremony, Vice Premier Liu Yandong, along with other distinguished guests, toured the China-ASEAN Education Cooperation and Talent Exchange Fair and the China-ASEAN Vocational Education Expo. It was during this tour that the "Scope Flipped Classroom" jointly presented by Scope and Changle No.1 Middle School captured the attention of many observers.

Enterprise-School Collaboration: Flipped Classroom Draws Attention

As one of the participating enterprises, Liu Jun, Chairman of Shenzhen Scope Technology Co., Ltd., was invited to attend the opening ceremony and a series of activities including exchange forums, bringing the "Scope Changle No.1 Middle School Flipped Classroom" to the International Educational Equipment Exhibition, a key segment of the Cooperation Week.

According to on-site staff, the Scope booth comprehensively showcased the company's technological research achievements in both hardware and software on the path to supporting educational reform. Through panel introductions, skill demonstrations, achievement displays, and live explanations, the company presented its systematic layout in the field of smart education. The centerpiece, the "Scope Changle No.1 Middle School Flipped Classroom Experience Pavilion," attracted many visitors who stopped to engage with the exhibit, receiving widespread praise.

In fact, the flipped classroom practice at Changle No.1 Middle School is the result of sustained effort. According to public information, as early as September 2013, Changle No.1 Middle School began piloting the flipped classroom across all subjects. By September 2014, it had achieved full-scale, normalized implementation across all grades, and it is now recognized as the largest-scale school with the most comprehensive subject coverage for flipped classroom implementation in China. As a technological partner, Scope has provided crucial hardware and software support for the realization of this model.

In-depth Analysis: How the "Two Stages, Four Steps, Ten Links" Model is Implemented

At this Educational Equipment Exhibition, the flipped classroom model showcased by Scope sparked significant interest among education professionals. According to Scope, this model is termed the "Two Stages, Four Steps, Ten Links" Flipped Classroom Teaching Model.

The "Two Stages" refer to the two phases of student learning: the "Self-Study and Questioning Stage" and the "Training and Presentation Stage," which combine to form a complete learning process. The "Four Steps" are the four preparatory steps for teachers before class, including "Lesson Planning," "Micro-lesson Design," "Development of Guided Learning Plans and Exercise Materials," and "Micro-lesson Recording." The "Ten Links" refer to the five specific learning activities within each of the two stages. The Self-Study stage includes: "Goal-Oriented Learning," "Self-Study of Materials," "Micro-lesson Assisted Learning," "Collaborative Peer Learning," and "Online Assessment." The Training and Presentation stage includes: "Problem Solving," "Training and Presentation," "Collaborative Enhancement," "Evaluation and Coaching," and "Summary and Reflection."

The core value of this model lies in truly unleashing students' learning autonomy. Through inquiry-based learning, students can identify and solve problems, gaining a thorough understanding of the context of a knowledge point, which doubles the learning effect with half the effort. In its summary of educational achievements, Changle No.1 Middle School pointed out that the flipped classroom utilizes the network to transcend the limitations of time and space. Students can learn from any teacher's micro-lessons at any time. The ability to fast-forward, pause, and replay micro-lesson videos helps students break free from the limitations of relying solely on auditory information transmission, allowing them to learn at their own pace.

On the technical support side, Scope provides learning terminals designed with ergonomics. These terminals feature extended battery life, support for external magnifying glasses, and are compatible with over 300 educational apps, forming a rich teaching resource system. More importantly, the company employs an MDM (Mobile Device Management) control system to manage the tablets students use, ensuring they cannot download apps arbitrarily, access websites freely, or copy files without authorization, thereby addressing the concerns of parents and schools regarding the management of electronic devices.

Policy Observation: From "Selling Hardware" to "Exporting Models"

Scope's presence at this ASEAN Education Cooperation Week represents not just a corporate brand showcase but also reflects the transformation path of Chinese educational information technology enterprises.

Compared to the "hardware export" phase when Scope participated in Thailand's "One Tablet Per Child" (OTPC) project in 2012, exporting 400,000 tablets, the "Flipped Classroom" jointly presented by Scope and Changle No.1 Middle School has now evolved into a comprehensive educational information technology solution—integrating hardware terminals, software platforms, curriculum resources, teaching models, and even teacher training.

This shift aligns perfectly with the initiatives proposed by Vice Premier Liu Yandong during this Education Week. She stated the need to improve cooperation mechanisms, serve the strategic alignment of both sides, and enhance practical cooperation in basic and vocational education. The "Flipped Classroom," which deeply integrates information technology with subject teaching, serves as an excellent vehicle for Chinese educational solutions to "go global."

Industry Impact: Enterprise-School Partnership Sets an Example

The collaboration between Changle No.1 Middle School and Scope provides a paradigm for how educational technology can translate into educational productivity. In its summary of teaching achievements, Changle No.1 Middle School mentioned that it has architected an online teaching system composed of a digital learning platform, campus mirror servers, a gigabit campus network, classroom wireless APs, and student personal tablet computers, achieving an effective integration of cutting-edge educational technology with classroom teaching under the class-based teaching system.

This integration is reflected not only at the technical level but also in the innovation of teaching philosophy. A representative from Changle No.1 Middle School stated that the school aims to further reduce the burden on students and promote personalized growth through the flipped classroom, while also reducing the burden on teachers and promoting their professional development, ultimately achieving the school-based implementation of the national curriculum.

On Scope's side, the company is positioned to provide comprehensive solutions for smart classrooms. In public speeches, Chief Operating Officer Li Hongzhou has elaborated that based on the flipped classroom model, Scope has synthesized three teaching models according to the actual circumstances of different schools: the traditional classroom informatization application model, the primary model of the smart classroom, and the advanced model of the smart classroom (Problem-Based Learning, PBL). The PBL approach breaks down teaching objectives into specific tasks, enabling students to engage in pre-class learning with targeted questions, resulting in higher efficiency.

Future Outlook: Building a Bridge to Educational Equity

Participating in this China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week was both a presentation and an exchange opportunity for Scope. Against the backdrop of the deepening "Belt and Road" initiative, cooperation in education between China and ASEAN is entering an unprecedented period of opportunity. In her speech, Vice Premier Liu Yandong proposed increasing youth exchanges, creating an upgraded version of the "China-ASEAN Dual 100,000 Student Flow Program," and establishing the "China-ASEAN Maritime Silk Road Scholarship." These measures will further promote the interconnection of regional educational resources.

For Scope, this exhibition not only enhanced the company's visibility and influence but also, more importantly, through exchanges with international education counterparts, the company gained a deeper understanding of the educational information technology needs of ASEAN countries. From Thailand to Colombia, from Changle No.1 Middle School to the Guiyang ASEAN Week, this enterprise from Nanshan Zhiyuan in Shenzhen is attempting to use a small tablet computer to connect China's innovative educational solutions with the future of global educational equity and development.
